Where's My Refund? How to Check Your IRS Refund

You've worked hard all year. You keep all your receipts. You file your tax return indicating that you will get a big refund this year. And where's your rebate check?

The IRS processes hundreds of millions of tax returns each year, and refund checks some are lost in the shuffle. Sometimes taxpayers' returns contain incorrect information that is holding that refund check. The most common mistake people make when filing their taxes make a mistake - a wrong number of social security, bank deposits or route number, or mailing address will cause a delay.

If your refund is lost, is on the road, or was never issued, the IRS has three ways to check the status of your refund. You will need your Social Security number, marital status and the amount of reimbursement for its report on the status of refund.

1) Go online.

The IRS created the "Where's My Refund?" website to allow taxpayers to check the status of your refund from their own computers.

2) Call a special toll-free number.

You can call the IRS toll-free hotline at (800) 829-1954 to verify the status of your refund.

3) Use your smartphone.

The IRS has gone mobile IRS2Go. IRS2Go is an intelligent application that lets you check the status of your refund with the IRS with your mobile device. You can find the free IRS2Go in the Apple App Store and Android Market.

What if my refund check was returned to the IRS as undeliverable?

Using the "Where's My Refund?" site, you may receive a message letting you know that the U.S. Postal Service return of your refund check to the IRS as undeliverable. The IRS online tracking allows some taxpayers to correct or change their email addresses online.

What if my refund check is lost?

Mail-in rebate at least 28 days before you can use the "Where's My Refund?" program to start tracking your refund. You will need to complete IRS Form 3911, Statement of taxpayers for reimbursement for the replacement process began. The IRS should also check that you refund check is lost or stolen before they will issue another refund check.

Do not forget to check your bank account.

The IRS direct deposits of refunds many in the bank accounts of taxpayers. This usually occurs within 8 to 14 days of filing. Before spending too much time calling the IRS or complete tax returns, check your bank statements closely to ensure that reimbursement did not slip by you.
